AJ had no idea how to get in touch with Logan. He had no idea why they had to have the book or what to do once they did, although, he assumed reading it would be a large part of it. He didnât know how much time they had but, nonetheless, felt an unexplainable urgency. With each tick of the second hand, time ran away from him, pulling some final apocalyptic event nearer and nearer, like a guillotine blade suspended over his head.
âWe have to get our asses in gear. Iâve got to tell them about the book,â AJ said to Clover. Hand in hand, they walked out into the living room.
âWhatâs up, kid?â John asked.
âWell, thereâs a couple things I guess we need to talk about.â
âJust you and I, or is this an all hands on deck situation?â
âI, uh, I guess everyone outta hear,â AJ said.
âOK, one sec,â John said. He took a walkie-talkie off the table next to him and double-tapped one of the buttons. A moment later the door to the hall opened and the guard let in Steve Nielsen.
âSit down, Steve. We need you to hear this, too. Itâll save me the pain in the ass of telling you later,â John said. Steve pulled a chair over and sat. He looked around the room at them and then , and then AJ began to speak.
John listened with an open mind. He believed what the kid said about the book, at least the fact that said book did exist. But what to make of it? He had assumed they could simply shoot the shit out of these things, these creepers, until they stopped coming after the kid, but this made more sense. They were dealing with something supernaturalâa word John hated to use but hadnât been able to find a better oneâso they would need something supernatural to stop it.
AJ finished his story, telling how his parents had recently unearthed the book while dredging through the attic.
âWell, we can send someone up there ASAPââ Steve began to suggest. John shook his head as AJ vocalized the objection.
âI have to go,â he said simply. âDo you want to tell my parents why a book needs a police escort? Iâm sure if you told them, it could be the key to defeating the living dead, theyâd understand.â
John rubbed the fading bruises on his neck and chewed his cigar. The kid had a point. They couldnât run around telling everyone, not unless they wanted to get locked up where they made you write letters home in crayon because they were afraid of what youâd do with a pointed object.
âWe wonât send you up there alone.â
âGood! Iâm not too keen on the idea of a solo road trip right now.â
John turned to Steve. âHow long you think to get clearance on this from Don? Hour? Two?â
Steve exhaled deeply and stared at the ceiling, ticking things off on his fingers to himself before looking back to John. âIâd say two, tops. Weâd want a couple unis in tow, yeah?â
âYeah, at least.
